Time Warp

I cannot say exactly what happened to the last two months. I tripped, slipped, and slept through nearly half a semester, and four paycheck periods without taking the slightest note to the world around me. I have been developing my dorky side by reading a good portion of the canon of literature, and of course waiting tables. I hate waiting tables. I have to remind myself every time some creep makes a pass at me or some bitch refuses to know the words "thank you," that it is the struggle that keeps me hungry. I learned a good joke last night; "What is the difference between a waitress and a proctologist?... A proctologist only has to serve one asshole at a time." I found out last week that I got into UCI, and I'll be starting in January as a creative writing major. I am nervous, exited, and completely unaware of what I'm getting myself into. We relocated from our dwelling on 15th street which we cherished for over three years, and you can now find us between 9th and 10th street in a much more plush beach pad. Jennavieve will be here in 12 days and counting, and life will change as we know it. I cannot wait.

A day with Saint Diego and Analog

I am so glad I got my shift covered on Wednesday and made it to Mission Beach for one of the most relaxing afternoons, and kick ass evenings I have had since this semester started. ASR is this weekend so I am sure the city was a buzz, but you couldn't tell while laying at the oceans shelf watching boys surf at noon. Analog with a change of pace rented a pimped out condo off of Mission and San Juan, and they were more than hospitable. They set aside an entire room dedicated to free garb and boards to borrow for anyone who wanted to surf. We went by the wave house in the afternoon where i perfected sitting in a hot tub while sipping rum and pineapple. Later, Will Crum with Kevin Yoches played in one of the ocean front rooms at the Analog house after all the guests had feasted at the private sushi bar. For being a simple two piece these two boys have more energy than most professional bands that fill out a stage. The end of the evening starts to blur and bleed for me, but I must give a special thanks to LeeBoy for getting me home safe, and a Happy Birthday to Lugo... :)

CATCH 22

For the first time in a long time I felt older on my birthday this year. After being twenty-one for arguably four years, twenty-two feels like a new pair jeans.

An ode to Jenavieve

Jenavieve is by definition of birth order my "little sister". However, there is nothing little about her; she wise and talented beyond both our years. Since I have been living in California she has grown and become everything I could have wanted for her. I taught her everything I knew and she has gone above and beyond any expectations I had. She will be moving in a month or two from Minnesota to join us here in California. These photographs are just a taste of the talent she is bringing with her. I know I am not alone in looking foreword to her presence as well as her inspiration.

Weekend Willderland

I spent my weekend following around Will Crum +1 like a good old fashion groupie. They played at the Light Gallery on 17th street in Costa Mesa for a group of close knit friends and a few innocent bystanders. Any nerves they or I had over the lack of turn out were demolished once their set began. They completely lit the room up. The thirty some people that were there could have been surrounded by three hundred more and we wouldn’t have noticed. They turned the gallery into a raging party, with everyone dancing, drinking, passing joints, and having a better time than anyone expected to have. It was incredible to say the least. Will is more confident than ever while playing in front of Kevin who smashes out their entire set on the drums.

Sunday was a brand new day, and a hot one at that. Me some ladies went over to the CAMP in Costa Mesa for a Toms Shoes event. We spent a lovely afternoon getting temporary tattoos and enjoying shaved ice in multicolored adirondack chairs. I got a little work done by throwing the girls into Hozell shirts and snapping some promo photos, but the real attraction was the days line up of bands. Will Crum +1 played in the heat of the afternoon sun, and we danced like flower children to his folk rocking melodies and clever cover songs. The Growlers played after Will which I thought was a wonderful paring for such a summery event. I felt I had a hard time capturing their lead singer Brooks and all his charisma on camera. They have an air about them that suggests they would play and look this good even if no one was watching: these five guys are the real deal. Their music is passive, beautiful, yet catchy with what I assume to be slightly troubled lyrics. I couldnt understand what was being said half the time, but I was so mesmerized it didn’t matter. Brooks reminds me of all the footage and old photographs of Jim Morrison that I've spent a good part of my life obsessing over. You’ll be able to find me brooding the corner at the next Growlers show, for sure.

The List

Though I wasn't present for this I think it's worth noting: Will Crum's set that was heard this weekend by any and all who came out was recorded Monday evening in an analog studio in China Town. Coming soon :)

I wanna be a rockstar...

I stumbled through my door wednesday night from my first of what I assume to be many Mickey Avalon concerts, and had a tuna melt as a precaution to my inevitable hangover. I found Mickey to be surprisingly sexy; his tattooed torso is androgynous in a way that is reminiscent of old prince music videos. The glitter, glamour and girls smoking cigarettes on stage make his performance clearly about more than just music. His raunchy play-school rhymes had the audience wet between the legs, and the little girls screaming for reasons they’re yet to understand. The entire scene was mesmerizing if nothing else. Mickey Avalon is a true testament to todays entertainment industry, and embodies the rock-star we would all love to be if only life were that short. The PRICKS opened for Mickey as their first show with RVCA. They were welcomed with open arms as the crowd peaked at only 9 p.m. I have been to more PRICKS shows than I can count and they never fail to entertain me. I can say with confidence that this was their best performance to date. For those of you who think you know you don't like their music; you clearly haven’t been to a show recently. Their overall aggressive tone has been brought down a few decimals making Mike Brophys ingenious lyrics all the more powerful. These boys have been hard at work for a long time, and they continue to churn out hit-worthy songs. They possess the energy of constantly teetering on the brink of stardom. Click on PRICKS to listen to songs and check out show dates: become a part of the movement!! xoxo
